Village Greens
Village Green is one of the sustainable camping options for Glastonbury 2020.
The Glastonbury experience
Marking the iconic festival’s fiftieth anniversary year, Glastonbury 2020 is set to take its place in the all-time hall of fame of legendary music events.
Throughout its long history, caring for the planet has been part and parcel of the Glastonbury ethos. So if you’re lucky enough to bag yourself a ticket, why not take advantage of the many opportunities the production team have devised to make your weekend more environmentally responsible?
Probably the best way you can do this is to head for one of the enchanting Village Greens which are located in Park Home, at Oxlyers near the Other Stage, and in the area surrounding the New Pier.
Sustainable camping
Established back in 2015, these bucolic spots are designed to make sustainable camping a central part of the Glastonbury experience.
With any luck, Glastonbury 2020 will be the year that Village Greens become as integral to the festival’s identity as the Pyramid Stage, the Stone Circle, or those (frankly terrifying) ‘long drop’ toilets. To be a part of it, just head to one of the areas mentioned above, look out for the Willow tracks, and the festival crew will welcome you with open arms. Eco friendly tents and camping is also avaiable a short walk from the Bronze Gate with Sustainable Camping
That’s all very well, you might say, but what can I expect to find once I get there? Well, hopefully nicer toilets for one thing, plus a communal campfire (ideal for a late night sing-along with some new best friends), a huge flag to help you find your way back to your tent of an evening, a plentiful supply of recycling bags, and the comfort of knowing that you’re surrounded by likeminded souls who won’t leave any rubbish behind when it’s time to head home.
Once you’re settled, you’ll find that the organisers of these temporary yet beautiful community spaces couldn’t be more supportive in enabling you to put your own creativity to work. In past years they’ve played host to everything from village fete style afternoon teas to impromptu afterhour’s gigs by the fireside. The sky, as they say, is the limit, so let your imagination run wild.
During the daytime, you’ll find that quite a few of your fellow campers will be taking part in the Worthy Warriors scheme which festival organisers came up with a few years ago with an eye to making camping at Glastonbury even more sustainable.
Worthy Warriors basically join in with festival site staff and volunteer to collect recyclable material which has been discarded by less conscientious festivalgoer’s. It’ll go at least a little way towards keeping your carbon footprint in check, and once you’ve finished you’ve got the perfect excuse to get the party started.
